EAST LANSING, Mich. -- University of Michigan fifth-year senior wrestler Jeremiah Tobias (Manchester, Mich./Manchester HS) captured the 149-pound individual title to lead a contingent of four unattached U-M placewinners at the Michigan State Open, held Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 20-21) at the Spartans' Jenison Field House.

Tobias, seeded third at 149 pounds, tallied a perfect 4-0 mark with three wins by fall, including a pin at 3:12 against Michigan State's Darren McKnight in the championship bout. With his first-place performance, Tobias owns six falls on the season, bringing his career total to 50 over five seasons at Michigan. He ranks second on U-M's career falls list, just five pins shy of the top spot, currently held by Jeff Catrabone (55, 1994-98).

Also placing among the top eight at their repsective weights were senior/junior Charles Kalil (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) and freshmen Tyrel Todd (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS) and Casey White (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS). It was the best finish of Kalil's U-M career, who posted a 6-2 mark to claim seventh place at 157 pounds. The Wolverine junior registered his first collegiate fall, pinning Short at 2:40 in the second round, and added a dominant 11-1 major decision over Central Michigan's Zack Strunk to place in a collegiate tournament for the first time in his career.

Todd and White each placed in their second consecutive open tournament as Todd claimed fifth at 174 pounds and White finished eighth at 197. Todd, seeded fifth, compiled a 5-2 record and earned bonus points for the first time in his brief U-M career, pinning Kent State's Eric Chine in the second round and recording an 11-1 major decision against Ohio State's Andrew Lowther. White tallied his second career technical fall, defeating Dean of Muskegon Community College 20-5 in the wrestlebacks.

Fifth-year senior captain Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) will hit the mat on Monday (Nov. 22) at the 2004 Marine All-Star Classic, organized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, in Edwardsville, Ill. Hosted by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, the meet will begin at 7 p.m. CST and feature Bertin squaring off against Ohio's second-ranked Jake Percival at 157 pounds.

The Wolverine squad will continue early-season action in two weeks at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday through Sunday, Dec. 3-4, in Las Vegas, Nev. Competition is slated to begin with pigtail rounds on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Cashman Center.
