ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team struggled to recover from its slow start, falling to No. 23 Stanford, 21-13, on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 24) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Wolverines won four individual matches, earning bonus points in one.

With the dual starting at 197 pounds, the Cardinal claimed three of the opening four matches and, after U-M evened the score at 9-9 just past the midpoint, similarly closed out with three of the final four.

Freshman Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS) and sophomore/freshman Angelo Latora (Portage, Mich./Central HS) earned decision victories at heavyweight at 141 pounds prior to the intermission break.

Coon, ranked 20th in latest InterMat poll, used a pair of takedowns to defeat Josh Marchok, 5-3, and remain unbeaten. He scored on a pair of bodylocks, using an underhook setup to twice get behind Marchok and drag him to the mat. He allowed just three escapes to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Latora rallied from an initial deficit to claim a 4-2 decision against Peter Russo at 141 pounds. The Cardinal wrestler converted on an early takedown in the first period, but Latora escaped quickly and finished on a single leg on the edge. He added another escape in the third.

Stanford won a swing match between nationally-ranked wrestlers at 125 pounds, where No. 17 Evan Silver edged No. 11 sophomore/freshman Conor Youtsey (Parma, Mich./Mason HS), 4-3, to deal the Wolverine his first loss of the season. After a scoreless first period, Silver took the advantage with a single-leg takedown in the closing seconds of the second period. Youtsey knotted up the score with his own single midway through the period. He opted to cut Silver loose with 47 seconds remaining, sacrificing the one-point lead, but could not penetrate the Cardinal wrestler's defense.

Fifth-year senior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) evened up the dual score with a 7-3 decision over Maxwell Hvolbek at 149 pounds -- the first match after the break. Grajales, ranked seventh, gave up the initial advantage on an early single leg, but quickly surged ahead, escaping and hitting an immediate arm drag to take control. He added a takedown in the third and rode for 3:02 but could not get a turn.

Stanford picked up big points with a pin in the 157-pound match, where Bret Baumbach reversed senior/junior Jake Salazar (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS) to his back for the fall at 2:52. Salazar had a significant lead after scoring on a blast double and cradling Baumbach for three back points. The Cardinal wrestler fought off his back and reversed the position to put Salazar in danger. The Wolverine fought for several seconds before Baumbach adjusted to get the pin.

The Cardinal followed with back-to-back close decisions at 165 and 174 pounds, earning an upset victory in the former, to seal the team victory.

Senior/junior captain Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) closed out the dual with the Wolverines' best individual effort, earning a 14-4 major decision over Thomas Kimbrell at 184 pounds. Huntley scored on six takedowns, including three in the final period, and rode for 2:47 advantage time.

The Wolverines will take a two-week break before heading to Las Vegas, Nev., for the annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-7, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. PST each day.
