LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior/junior captain Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) advanced to the 174-pound semifinal round to headline the No. 14-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's first-day performance the 31st annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday (Nov. 30) at the Las Vegas Invitational. The Wolverines have three additional wrestlers alive in the wrestlebacks and sit in 12th place in the team race with 29 points.

Yates, ranked 13th nationally and seeded third, posted a perfect 3-0 record with a pair of major decisions, including a 16-5 win over Colorado State Pueblo's Ray Hall in the quarterfinals. Yates scored on seven takedowns in the bout -- four in the third period and accumulated 2:15 in riding-time advantage. The Wolverine captain also cruised past Wyoming's L.J. Helbig, 12-1, in the opening round behind three takedowns and four back points. Yates is 8-0 on the season with seven bonus wins.

Michigan's other two quarterfinalists, freshman Taylor Massa (St. Johns, Mich./St. Johns HS) and junior/sophomore Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy), dropped close decision losses to Missouri opponents at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Massa, seeded fifth, sacrificed an early lead in a 9-7 loss to the Tigers' fourth-seeded Zach Toal, giving up three unanswered takedowns after jumping out to a 4-1 advantage in the first period. He cruised in his first two matches, earning a bonus point with a 17-8 major decision against American's Phillip Barreiro in the opening round. He scored six takedowns and two back points to dominate the contest.

Huntley, seeded sixth, lost a controversial decision to Missouri's third-seeded Brent Haynes, 4-1, on a second-period takedown and 1:03 riding time. The official prematurely awarded Haynes a takedown midway through the second, despite only having one leg wrapped up, and spent nearly 45 seconds hanging onto the leg. The referees conferred after a late stoppage and cut down Toal's riding time in half, but the Tiger wrestler earned time advantage back in the third to seal the win.

Senior/junior Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) went 3-1 on the day at 125 pounds, bouncing back from a disappointing second-round loss with back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket. He cruised to a 12-0 major decision over Army's Hunter Wood in his first wrestleback match, scoring three takedowns and four back points, before taking advantage of a quick start in an 8-6 decision against Oregon State's Joey Palmer.

Michigan lost two wrestlers to injury in the tournament as senior/junior Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and junior/sophomore Jake Salazar (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS) both split their opening two matches before withdrawing from the tournament. Grajales earned extra points with a 17-2 technical fall over Cal Baptist's Dylan Cataline at 149 pounds, while Salazar used two takedowns at 1:10 riding time to knock off Missouri's eighth-seeded Kyle Bradley at 157.

Four Wolverines were eliminated on the first day of action. Sophomore/freshman Camryn Jackson (Lansing, Mich./Eastern HS) and freshman Jordan Thomas (Gowen, Mich./Greenville HS) posted 1-2 records at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively, while freshman Rossi Bruno (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) and fifth-year senior Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) went 2-2 at 133 pounds and heavyweight.

The Wolverines return to the mats tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 1) for the second and final day of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The morning session, featuring the semifinals and continued wrestlebacks, is slated for a 9 a.m. PST start at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
