INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Four University of Michigan wrestlers earned seeds for the NCAA Championships, including three freshmen and two in the top five at their respective weight classes, the NCAA announced, along with full brackets, on Wednesday evening (March 9). The Wolverines qualified seven total wrestlers to the NCAA tournament.
Sophomore/freshman Logan Massa headlines the Wolverine contingent with the No. 2 seed at 165 pounds. Massa, who is 27-2, has been ranked No. 2 since capturing the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in Demcember and, most recently, took second place at the Big Ten Championships. His only two losses of the season, including in the Big Ten final, have come against Illinois' No. 1 Isaiah Martinez. He will face Old Dominion's Seldon Weight in the first round.
Sophomore/freshmen Stevan Micic and Myles Amine also garnered seeds in their NCAA Championships debut. Micic earned the No. 5 seed at 133 pounds after compiling a 24-5 season record and claiming third place at the Big Ten Championships. He will face Tennessee Chattanooga's Chris Debien in the first round. Amine, who is 26-5 on the season, also finished third at last weekend's Big Ten meet and is seeded No. 9 at 174 pounds. He will open against Edinboro's Ty Schoffstall, whom he previously defeated at the CKLV tournament in December.
Senior Brian Murphy rounds out the seeded Wolverine wrestlers with the No. 10 spot at 157 pounds. Murphy, a 2015 All-American who is making his fourth straight NCAA Championships appearance, is 16-8 on the season and finished fourth at the Big Ten tournament. He will open against Virginia's Andrew Atkinson, whom he defeated in U-M's season opener in November.
Fifth-year senior Conor Youtsey will be unseeded in his fourth straight NCAA appearance at 125 pounds. Youtsey, a two-time NCAA All-American, rejoined the Wolverine roster in mid-January when injuries sidelined Michigan's other two 125-pounders. He is 6-6 this season and finished fifth at the Big Ten meet. He will face Wyoming's No. 15 Drew Templeman in the first round.
Sophomore/freshman Sal Profaci and junior/sophomore Zac Hall are unseeded in their NCAA debuts at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Profaci, who is 13-15, earned an at-large selection after taking 10th at the Big Ten Championships. He will face Ohio State's No. 12 Luke Pletcher first. Hall claimed fourth place at the Big Ten meet and carries a 17-10 record into the NCAA tournament. He will wrestle Lehigh's No. 10 Laike Gardner in the first round.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, March 16-18, at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
