Salazar Captures University National Freestyle Title
Dan Yates

AKRON, Ohio -- University of Michigan wrestling sophomore/freshman Jake Salazar (Midway, Utah/Wasatch HS) captured the 74kg/163-pound freestyle title to headline the Wolverines' performance at the University Nationals last weekend (Sat-Sun., June 2-3) at the University of Akron Field House.

Salazar went 6-0 at the tournament, capping his performance with a 1-0, 1-0 decision against Lehigh's Eric Hess in the championship match. He converted on double-leg takedowns to secure both periods and the clinching point in the final 10 seconds of the second period.

Salazar provided Michigan its first University Nationals champion since Josh Churella won at 66kg/145.5 pounds in 2008. Churella went on to make the 2008 University World team and place seventh at the international event.

"I think Jake wrestled very solid," said assistant coach Donny Pritzlaff. "He didn't lose a period. He was attacking a lot more than we've seen him attack this year, and I think that was key to him winning. He just looked really solid and really strong. He stayed in good position, and he was competitive in all positions. It was a great weekend for him."

The Wolverines also boasted a pair of placewinners at the upperweights as junior/sophomore Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) took fifth place at 79kg/174 pounds and sophomore/freshman Max Huntley (Emerald Isle, N.C./Blair Academy) placed seventh at 96kg/211 pounds.

Yates posted an 8-1 record, reeling off six straight wins in the wrestlebacks after falling to two-time Maryland All-American and eventual champion Josh Asper in the second round. The Wolverine wrestler defeated Buffalo's John-Martin Cannon, 1-0, 0-1, 4-2, in the fifth-place contest. Yates used an early single leg and a late three-point chestlock to claim the third period.

Huntley went 5-2, bouncing back from a loss in the quarterfinals with a pair of consolation victories, including an 8-0, 0-2, 5-1 win over Josef Rau in the seventh-place contest. After a dominant first period, Huntley gave up a pair of pushouts to drop the second but rebounded in the third, scoring all five points in the final minute of the period, including a late pancake that put Rau on his back.

With their performances, Salazar and Yates qualified for the 2012 University World Team Trials, scheduled for August 17-18 in Colorado Springs, Colo. As a University Nationals champion, Salazar earned an automatic slot in the best-two-of-three final against the winner of the challenge tournament.

"For the most part, I was pretty pleased with the way our guys competed," said Pritzlaff. "Not many of them have extensive freestyle experience. It was 10 more guys than we brought to this tournament last year, so I think that's a step in the right direction. We had three placers. It was definitely something we can build off of. With the guys that didn't have success, we need to correct some things and make adjustments. But overall it was a good tournament."
