COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of Michigan freshman Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS), who captured the heavyweight title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational over the weekend, was named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week, the governing body announced Monday (Dec. 9).
Coon posted a perfect 5-0 record at the annual Las Vegas tournament (Dec. 6-7), notching two pins and a major decision and knocking off the event's top two seeds -- both ranked among the nation's top-five heavyweights. Coon defeated NC State's third-ranked Nick Gwiazdowski, 3-1 SV, in the quarterfinal round before rallying to edge Boise State's fifth-ranked J.T. Felix, 7-5 SV, in the championship final. He is the third U-M rookie to capture a CKLV individual title and the first Wolverine to win at heavyweight since 2005.
Coon is 13-0 in his first collegiate season. His win in Las Vegas shot him to No. 4 in the latest InterMat heavyweight poll.
An accomplished freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler, Coon has claimed four USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week accolades over the last three years. He became the first ever back-to-back USAW Junior Triple Crown winner (2011, 12) and was a 2011 Cadet World champion in freestyle.
Coon and the Wolverines will wrap up its first-semester dual schedule this Sunday (Dec. 15), hosting intrastate rival Central Michigan at 2 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
