ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling program will host a free wrestling clinic on Sunday, Jan. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. The clinic, the second of the 2011-12 season, is open to all ages and skill levels and will feature technique instruction from former Wolverine standouts Andy Hrovat and Tyrel Todd as well as members of the Michigan team. No registration is necessary, and video cameras will be permitted.
Following the clinic, the Wolverines will face Illinois at 2 p.m., at Cliff Keen Arena. All clinic participants will receive free admission to the meet and a food voucher. Accompanying parents and coaches are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance via the U-M Ticket Office.
As a Wolverine wrestler (1999-2002), Hrovat was a three-time NCAA All-American at 184 pounds, placing as high as fourth while becoming the first U-M true freshman to claim a top-eight finish at the national event in 14 years. He served as team captain during his senior campaign -- the same year he carried the nation's No. 1 ranking into the postseason -- and contributed to Michigan's back-to-back top-10 NCAA finishes in his final two seasons. Hrovat's collegiate record of 132-39 still ranks among the best in Wolverine program history.
Hrovat thrived on the international scene following his graduation, representing the United States in the 84 kg/185-pound freestyle division at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Hrovat also competed at the 2006 World Championships and has earned medals at the New York Athletic Club Holiday International Open (gold, 2005, '06), Henri Deglane Challenge (gold, 2005, '07), Ivan Yarygin International (bronze, 2007), Pan American Games (silver, 2007), Poland Open (silver, 2006) and Dave Schultz Memorial International (silver, 2005).
Todd was a three-time NCAA All-American during his Michigan career (2006-09) -- at 184 (2007, '08) and 197 (2009) pounds -- earning national finishes of third, fourth and fifth place. He captured the Big Ten 197-pound title as a senior (2009) and won the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at 184 pounds in 2007. Todd posted a 121-30 career record, including a 54-11 mark in dual meets, to rank 16th among Michigan's all-time winningest wrestlers. He accumulated 22 career falls, leading the team with 10 during his senior season.
Todd also has excelled in freestyle wrestling, placing fourth at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials and fifth at the 2007 U.S. Open in the 84 kg/185-pound division. He is currently training in Ann Arbor for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Michigan will host its final wrestling clinic of the 2011-12 season prior to its Indiana dual meet on Friday, Jan. 13. The free clinic will run from 5-6 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Full details, including featured clinicians, will be announced soon.
