MADISON, Wis. -- The 14th-ranked University of Michigan men's cross country team finished in fifth place in a highly competitive 10,000-meter NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday (Nov. 11). Racing at the University of Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Championship Course, the Wolverines placed two runners in the top 11.
Michigan was led once again by senior/junior Aaron Baumgarten, as it has in each race Baumgarten has participated in this season. Leading out the gate through the 6,000-meter mark of the race, he was the first U-M athlete across the line in 10th place with a time of 30:33.4. Senior Billy Bund was right behind Baumgarten in 11th place with a time of 30:34.0.
Baumgarten and Bund ran the second- and third-best times, respectively, of the season at 10,000 meters. Baumgarten now owns two of the top four 10,000-meter finishes for the program this year.
While Baumgarten led for a majority of the race, a strong Wisconsin team, and eventual regional champion, had a masterful race with a trio of Badgers boxing out a majority of the field. Eventual individual champion Malachy Schrobilgen and second-place finisher Morgan McDonald were positioned to strike just past the 6,000-meter mark, and the duo led a furious sprint to the line, finishing in a photo finish in 30:22.2.
Graduate student Connor Herr had an 18th-place finish (30:50.5), while Jordy Hewitt was the sixth regional freshman to cross the line, doing so in a time of 31:04.7 for a 23rd-place finish overall. Senior co-captain Connor Mora came in 45th with a time of 31:39.9.
Michigan awaits a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championships next Saturday (Nov. 19) in Terre Haute, Indiana. Official designations of teams can only be accomplished after the results of the NCAA regional meets have been completed. If selected, it will mark U-M's third time running in Terre Haute at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course.
