LONDON, England-- Sophomore Tony Smoragiewicz (Rapid City, S.D./Rapid City Central) of the University of Michigan men's cross country team finished 42nd at the International Triathlon Union Junior World Triathlon Championships on Thursday, Sept. 12, in London. He was the second of three members of Team USA to cross the finish line, completing the sprint course in 53:59.00.

A sprint distance triathlon consists of a 750 meter swim, 20K bike and 5K run. Smoragiewicz finished the swim portion in a time of 9:30.00 and was sitting in 59th place. After averaging 1:27.00 kilometers/hour for the duration of the 20K bike, he moved up five spots to 54th and got off his bike at 38:26.00. He began the 5K run in 52nd place at 38:54.00 and used his strength in distance running to advance 10 more spots during the run. He completed the 5K run in 15:05.00, crossing the finish line in 42nd place in a time of 53:59.00.

This marked Smoragiewicz's third appearance at the world championships as a member of Team USA. He won bronze at the 2011 event in Beijing, China, and placed 34th a year ago in Auckland, New Zealand.

Smoragiewicz will now return to Ann Arbor and rejoin the Wolverines for the remainder of the cross country season. The Maize and Blue will get a preview of the Big Ten Championship course on Friday (Sept. 13) at the Purdue Invitational, but Smoragiewicz will not be competing.
