Oct. 15, 2013
ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- University of Michigan men's cross country head coach Alex Gibby announced Tuesday (Oct. 15) that seniors Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) and Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns), as well as junior Mason Ferlic (St. Paul, Minn./Mounds Park Academy) were named team captains for the 2013 season.
"We waited until mid-season to elect our captains to get a real sense of where our leadership was coming from," said Gibby. "The three men selected by a vote of their peers were no surprise to me, as they have been providing group and individual direction for the past couple of years."
Beams and Rayyan will serve as captains for the second consecutive season, while Ferlic will be a first-year leader for the Maize and Blue. Beams and Rayyan each earned All-Big Ten second team and All-Great Lakes Region honors in 2012. Ferlic missed the 2012 championship season due to injury, but was a member of U-M's championship squad as a freshman in 2011.
"As individual leaders, Morsi, Mark and Mason have different styles and some real strengths, but as a collective group, I think they provide the strong direction needed to maximize this team's potential," Gibby added.
"I'm excited to see what this group can accomplish with positive peer leadership in front of a talented, young group of aggressive racers."
Michigan's trio of captains will lead the Wolverines in its final regular-season test on Saturday (Oct. 19) at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The 8K race is set to begin at 12:40 p.m. CDT at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
