Oct. 28, 2012
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan men's cross country head coach Alex Gibby announced Sunday (Oct. 28) that five members of the squad were named team captains for the postseason. Seniors Dan Lowry (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College) and Zach Ornelas (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge) and juniors Mark Beams (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) and Morsi Rayyan (Dewitt, Mich./St. Johns), as well as junior/sophomore Nick Kern (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), were voted captains by their coaches and teammates.
"We waited on naming captains to see who emerged as leaders as the season progressed and found that we had more people stepping up to fill this role in multiple ways," said Gibby. "It's a large group of captains, but each of them brings outstanding leadership characteristics to the table and reinforces our message well through their actions and words."
All five team captains have been members of Michigan's varsity squad throughout the season. Beams, Ornelas and Rayyan were each members of U-M's postseason squad last season, while Lowry was an All-American at Brown University last year before joining the Wolverines for the 2012 season. Beams, Lowry, Ornelas and Rayyan will each represent the Wolverines at the Big Ten Championships.
"This group's names appeared on almost 100 percent of our ballots and share the trust of the coaching staff as they lead us through these important weeks and in our transition into the track season, " Gibby added.
The Wolverines begin the championship portion of their season today (Sunday, Oct. 28) as they compete in the Big Ten Championships at Michigan State at 11:45 a.m. These five captains will also lead Michigan as they participate in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Nov. 9 and the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17.
