VANCOUVER, B.C -- Freshman Ben Flanagan (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's) of the University of Michigan men's cross country team used a runner-up finish at the Canadian National Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 30, to land a spot on Team Canada for the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships, which will take place on Feb. 22, 2014, in Trinidad & Tobago.
Flanagan overcame rainy and muddy conditions during the junior men's 8K race at Beach Park in Vancouver, B.C., to record his second runner-up finish in as many years. He led for a good portion of the race and used a strong mid-race push to make it a two-man race between himself and the Ontario provincial prep champion, Justyn Knight. With less than 1,000 meters to go, Knight, the eventual champion, gained a five-meter lead on Flanagan and held on for win.
Flanagan will make his second consecutive appearance with the Canadian Junior National Team at the NACAC Championships, which will be held on Feb. 22, 2014. He finished third a year ago in a 6K time of 18:56.92.
