Rower April Newberry Recipient of Raeder's Raiders Award
April 30, 2013
Michigan rower April Newberry, a 2012 graduate from Paris, Michigan is the recipient of the 2013 Raeder's Spirit Award for her efforts during the spring 2012 rowing season. After not making a boat her previous years, April rowed on the Second Eight Boat that won a National Championship and was undefeated for the year.
This NCAA championship boat was just the second national championship in program history. Mark Rothstein, Michigan Rowing Coach, who nominated April, said "she maintained a wonderful attitude over the years and her commitment to improving never wavered. April's leadership and enthusiasm was a big factor in her boat winning the NCAA's."
The Raeder's Raiders Spirit Award was established in 2006 to recognize a varsity athlete for character, teamwork, dedication, perseverance and intensity of athletic performance while coming off the bench. It's named after J. Paul Raeder, a member of the Michigan football team from 1957 to 1961, and a number of his teammates known collectively as "Raeder's Raiders."
The award is sponsored by the Letterwinners M Club on behalf of the Raeder family.
