Greg Meyer Honored For More Than Running
Sept. 15, 2011
GRAND RAPIDS - It has been 28 years already, but Greg Meyer knows the day will come when the nine words that have trailed his name like an aerial banner will be passed on to somebody else.
"People tease me all the time, saying I have the longest last name in America," he said with a chuckle.
Meyer is referring to what happened in 1983, when he became the last American man to win the Boston Marathon.
Tonight in Novi, Meyer -- who turns 56 on Sunday -- will be the first distance runner to be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. The seven other inductees that make up the 55th class are Carl Banks, Jerome Bettis, Lloyd Carr, Carol Hutchins, Dick LeBeau, John Spring and Ron Thompson (posthumously).
