Field Hockey Team One Reunion
Dec. 4, 2014

Field Hockey Team One gathered for the Dedication Weekend for the second Field Hockey building and the new blue Ocker Field during the last weekend in September. Thirteen of 17 Team One members returned for the festivities for the first time together since the fall of 1973! Team One players came from Illinois, California, Oklahoma, New York, Maryland, and all over Michigan.

Team One captain, Sheryl Szady, wrote the following about the weekend:

"We watched the Maryland field hockey game on Friday night, and were delighted to meet some of the 2001 NCAA Championship gals at Dominck's afterward. Saturday, we tailgated and then took some shots on the new maize'n'blue Ocker Field before heading to the Brown Jug football game. We tailgated afterwards with the Elgins, whose mother played field hockey with Marie Hartwig in 1925-1929, and who named the Louise Cooley Sutherland Alumni Room in the new building for her. Upon our arrival at the new building, Head Coach Marcia Pankratz gave a special tour of the facility. We were happy to greet Team One Coach Phyllis Weikart (82) after all of these years, and listened as she presented a field hockey stick from the first field hockey game in America to the Michigan Field Hockey program. After Dedication comments were completed, Team One gal Gray Gilfillan took the honorary first shot on goal, and I presented the game ball to Team 42 Captain Leslie Smith with words of greeting and support from all the field hockey alums in attendance. Team One watched Team 42 beat Rutgers from the new Alumni Deck to complete the afternoon. We lingered long after the game on the deck, not wanting to leave this special gathering, this special moment."
