April Newberry named 2013 Raeder's Raiders Spirit Award Winner
April Newberry, a senior from Paris, Michigan on the U-M Rowing team, is the recipient of the 2013 Raeder's Spirit Award. In 2012, Newberry rowed on the 2nd Eight Boat that won a National Championship and was undefeated for the year. This NCAA championship boat was just the second national championship in program history.
Mark Rothstein, the Michigan Rowing Coach, nominated April. He said, "she maintained a wonderful attitude over the years and her commitment to improving never waivered. April's leadership and enthusiasm was a big factor in her boat winning the NCAA's."
The Raeder's Spirit Award was established in 2006 to recognize a varsity athlete for character, teamwork, dedication, perseverance, and intensity of athletic performance while coming off the bench. The Award is named after J. Paul Raeder, a member of the Michigan Football team from 1957 to 1961, and a number of his teammates who were known collectively as "Raeder's Raiders." The Award is sponsored by the Raeder family. In recognition of April, the Letterwinners M Club will donate $500 to the women's rowing program.
