MEN'S GYMNASTICS
Two University of Michigan men's gymnasts competed on day one of the London Olympics on Saturday (July 28).
Junior Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Corona del Mar), a member of Team USA, advanced to the event finals on vault with a 16.300 to qualify fourth. He added two other top-15 finishes -- on floor (12th, 15.366) and parallel bars (13th, 15.316). He also added a 20th-place finish on pommel horse with a 14.333 and notched a 14.033 on high bar to take 43rd. Team USA as a whole qualified first in the team competition and will be seeded first heading into the men's team final Monday (July 30) at 11:30 a.m.
The individual event finals for vault are slated for Monday, Aug. 6.
Redshirt senior Syque Caesar (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy), representing Bangladesh, scored a 13.700 on parallel bars to take 27th, and was 29th on floor (14.666) and 50th on high bar (13.700).

MEN'S SWIMMING
Former University of Michigan men's swimmer Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) earned the 65th medal in U-M history, taking bronze in the finals of the 400-meter freestyle Saturday (July 28) at the Serpentine in Hyde Park. Former volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps placed fourth in the 400 individual medley. [ Complete Story ]

ROWING
Tom Peszek was the first U-M rower to compete in the 2012 London Games on Saturday (July 28), rowing in the men's pair event with his partner Silas Stafford. A member of the U-M men's club team, Peszek's pair boat raced in the second heat against Canada, Austrailia and the Netherlands this morning at Eton Dorney in London. The Americans finished in fourth place with a time 6:26.69, almost three seconds behind first-place Canada. Peszek's boat will now race in Monday's repechage against Hungary, Germany and Serbia. The top three boats from Monday's race will advance to the semifinals.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Former Wolverine Krista Phillips' (2007-10) Olympic debut with Canada was spoiled by by Russia, which rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter for a 58-53 win in the opening game of Group B action at the London Basketball Arena. Phillips, who played 10 minutes before fouling out, scored four points on 2-for-3 shooting, grabbed three rebounds, and added one assist.
