SWIMMING
Tyler Clary (2008-10) captured gold in the 200-meter backstroke in an Olympic-record time of 1:53.41.
Meanwhile, former U-M volunteer assistant coach Michael Phelps won his 20th Olympic medal and his 16th gold in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 1:54.27.
Additionally, Phelps won heat number one of the 100-meter butterfly shortly after his gold with a time of 50.86 and earned the top seed in the finals.
Also in the 100-meter butterfly, Serbia's Milorad Cavic, coached by U-M head coach Mike Bottom, swam a 51.90 in prelims to earn the fifth-fastest time in the race and a spot in lane number three of the second heat. In the semifinals, Cavic notched a 51.66 and the fourth seed in the finals.
Phelps and Cavic will each swim in the 100-meter butterfly final Friday (Aug. 3) at 2:38 p.m.
Barry Murphy of Ireland, coached by U-M assistant coach Mark Hill, swam a 22.76 in heat four of the 50-meter freestyle, to narrowly miss out on a spot in the finals by .46, while Club Wolverine swimmer George Bovell clocked a 21.77, earning the fifth-fastest time in the race and will swim in lane four of the second heat of semifinals. Finals for the 50-meter freestyle will be swum Friday at 2:45 p.m.
