COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held Ohio State without a point over the final 7:23 of the first half to take control of the game, knocking off the Buckeyes, 64-49, on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 5) at Value City Arena.

Junior guard Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) recorded her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 10 points with 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Siera Thompson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) went for 18 points, two assists and two steals, with junior guard Shannon Smith (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview [Trinity Valley CC]) chipping in 17 points and three assists. U-M outrebounded OSU, 48-33, led by junior forward Cyesha Goree (Grand Rapids, Mich./Wyoming Park) and Elmblad each with 12. For the game, U-M shot 92.9 percent (26-for-28) from the free throw line, including a perfect 20-for-20 mark in the second half.

Ohio State scored the game's first basket, a three-pointer that was originally ruled a two-pointer, before replay reversed the call. Michigan scored 12 of the game's next 16 points for a 12-7 lead off a Smith putback to force an OSU timeout with 12:42 on the clock. The Wolverines kept at least a five-point cushion the rest of the half.

Michigan took a 25-13 lead into the break, holding Ohio State without a point for the final 7:23 of the half. Thompson led all scorers with nine points, with Smith chipping in six. Goree hauled down nine boards in the half, as senior forward Val Driscoll (Stoughton, Mass./Archbishop William) and Elmblad each grabbed six. U-M outrebounded the Buckeyes, 28-18, during the first 20 minutes of action and held Ohio State to 18.8 percent (6-for-32) shooting.

U-M's first eight points of the second half came from the free throw line, before Thompson nailed her second trey of the contest for a 36-19 U-M lead, forcing an OSU timeout with 14:44 remaining. The Wolverines pushed their lead to 19 points, 43-24, on a corner three from freshman guard Paige Rakers (Carlyle, Ill./Carlyle) with 11:44 on the clock.

The Wolverines led by as many as 21 in the second half, staking that lead off a pair of Thompson free throws.

Michigan returns home on Thursday (Jan. 9), hosting Wisconsin at 7 p.m.
