WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan's women's basketball team led wire to wire and used a balanced scoring attack in a 65-49 win at No. 22 Purdue on Wednesday night (Jan. 15) inside Mackey Arena. It is Michigan's first win over a ranked opponent this season, and the Maize and Blue moved its record to 5-0 in true road contests.
Sophomore guard Madison Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich./Liggett) led all scorers with 17 points on the night., shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point range. Freshman guard Siera Thompson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) and junior guard Shannon Smith (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview [Trinity Valley CC]) each had 12 points, while junior forward Cyesha Goree (Grand Rapids, Mich./Wyoming Park) had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with her eight points. Junior guard Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) had eight points, nine rebounds and five assists, and senior forward Val Driscoll (Stoughton, Mass./Archbishop William) had four blocks to go with her six points and four boards.
The Wolverines raced out to an 8-0 lead on the Boilermakers in the first 2:02 of the game. Goree had four points in that run, while Purdue called timeout after Driscoll's jumper at 17:57. Purdue cut U-M's lead to a single point on two occasions, but an 18-8 run over a 6:42 span was capped by a Ristovski jumper, giving the Maize and Blue a 26-17 lead with 8:15 left in the stanza. Thompson's triple put the Wolverines up 31-24 with 3:21 left, and her three with 31 seconds remaining gave the Wolverines their largest lead of the half and made the halftime score 36-26. Michigan forced 11 Boilermaker turnovers and outrebounded Purdue, 19-13, in the first 20 minutes.
The Maize and Blue kept its foot on the accelerator to start the second half. Ristovski's layup at 15:45 put Michigan up 42-29. A pair of Driscoll free throws gave U-M a 46-30 lead with 13:30 remaining. Purdue cut the lead to 10, but a three from Ristovski at 9:06 gave the Wolverines the 50-37 advantage. The Boilermakers trimmed Michigan's lead to 54-47 with 3:27 in the game, but Ristovski answered with five straight points to put the Wolverines back up by double digits. U-M then closed out the game with a 10-2 scoring run.
Michigan was 24-of-53 (45.3 percent) from the floor and hit six three-pointers. The Maize and Blue held a 39-37 rebounding advantage and had 10 steals and seven blocks in the contest. U-M's defense also held Purdue to a 30.6-percent shooting clip.
The Wolverines return home on Saturday (Jan. 18), hosting Illinois at Crisler Center. Tip is slated for noon, and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. [ Tickets ]
