CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Sophomore forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) posted a career-high 21 points and the University of Michigan women's basketball team picked up a 64-48 road win at Illinois on Thursday night (Jan. 28) in Assembly Hall.

Joining Reynolds in double figures was senior center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman Collegiate) with 13 points as the Wolverines led the entire way. Phillips also led the team on the glass with seven rebounds.

Out of the locker room in the second half, Illinois picked it up on the defensive side of things and right away opened with a 6-2 early run, but Michigan weathered the storm in large part to the play of freshman forward Nya Jordan (Lathrup Village, Mich./Detroit Community), who posted a career-high nine points and six rebounds off the bench.

U-M held Illinois' leading scorer Jenna Smith to only seven points and five rebounds, well below her season average. The Wolverines also shot the ball well (44.9 percent, 22-of-49) from the floor.

The Wolverines opened the game with a 6-0 run with just a minute off the game clock behind the inside play of Phillips and extended their lead to 10-0 before Illinois got its first bucket, a three-pointer from Fabiola Josil.

Michigan extended its lead to 16-6 with back-to-back three-pointers from Reynolds. Illinois then seemed to come alive midway through the half and cut a once 10-point Michigan lead to seven points with 6:59 remaining. Michigan used a short 5-0 run to pull ahead 30-18 and held a comfortable 38-24 lead at halftime.

The Wolverine defense was the key in the first half, forcing Illinois into 11 turnovers, which turned into 17 U-M points on the other end. U-M also held a marked advantage in the paint, outscoring Illinois, 14-6, down low.

The Wolverines are back in action on Sunday (Jan. 31) when they welcome Penn State to Crisler Arena for the "Pack the House" Challenge. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
