ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team dropped an 81-63 contest to Penn State on Thursday (Feb. 3) at Crisler Arena. U-M scored the first points of the contest but never led again after Penn State took a 4-3 lead at the 18:02 mark of the first half.
Penn State shot 56.5 percent (35-of-62) for the contest as the Wolverines managed a 44.1-percent clip (26-of-59). With 13 points, sophomore center Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) led three Wolverines in double figures, with senior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) and junior guard Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) chipping in 10 apiece.
The Wolverines scored the first basket of the game on a trey by Boylan, but Penn State answered with three consecutive buckets and never trailed the rest of the contest. Michigan fell behind by as many as 13 points in the first half, but consecutive lay-ups by Sheffer and Boylan cut the PSU lead to nine right before the break. The Lady Lions scored again with 24 seconds left in the half, sending them to the locker room with a 36-25 advantage.
The Maize and Blue struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 35.5 percent (11-for-31), while the visitors shot 47.1 percent (16-for-34).
Penn State extended its lead out of the break to 41-27 -- its largest lead of the game to that point -- before baskets from Sheffer, sophomore guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) and Hicks cut the U-M deficit to just seven points at 43-35 at the 17:22 mark. The Wolverines had a hard time containing the hot-shooting Lady Lions from there, as PSU shot 67.9 percent (19-for-28) in the second half.
The Wolverines host the annual Pink Zone game on Sunday (Feb. 6) when they welcome Big Ten foe Illinois to Crisler Arena. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be webcast on www.BigTenNetwork.com. Additionally, fans can follow along with Matt Park and Jennifer Smith on the call on WLBY AM 1290.
