Michigan Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
On the game ... "Obviously, we are very happy with the outcome of the game. Purdue is an excellent team and a great program with great tradition. I know they always play exceptionally well here, so anytime you are able to go on the road in our league and come out with the victory, you feel pretty good about it. I thought it was a really good basketball game. We came out strong to start, but we knew Purdue would come back with their runs, which they did in both halves. They went up in the second half, and I was really proud of our composure and how we stuck together. Even though they got a little bit of a lead, we were able to get it back. I thought we made our free throws down the stretch and kept our composure. We limited our turnovers much better in the second half than we did in the first. We are really happy to get the win; it had been a long time at Purdue."
On the zone defense ... "I thought we spent a lot of time in the last couple of days trying to really take away their post play because they do a great job of getting the ball to their posts on the seal. We really worked on packing it in and encouraging their guards to take outside shots, with the exception of (Courtney) Moses. We were going to live and die by that. If they made shots, we were not going to be successful. We knew how important it was going to be for us to pack it in and really take away their inside and limit their rebounding."
On Kate Thompson's shooting ... "She is unbelievable. I had a meeting with her two days ago because after the Illinois game, she did not really shoot the ball well. Sometimes when you are a shooter and you don't shoot the ball well, you become a little hesitant. You are not shooting it with as much confidence, and it is almost like you are trying to force the ball to go in. I thought she did that a few times in the Illinois game when she was 5-for-16. She made two late that she didn't even think about because we needed her to make them. I think her biggest thing is that she cannot hesitate, and she did a tremendous job today. I thought our kids did a great job of getting her good screens to get open shots, which she hasn't been able to get open shots in a long time. A lot of them were contested with a hand in her face, but she was hesitant-free. I think that is a big thing as a shooter, to know that we (the team) have confidence in you and you have the green light. She really stepped up. That four-point play was the turning point, and she did a nice job for us tonight."
On what this win will mean down the road ... "I think it is a tremendous win for us. I think it is a great win, in terms of the NCAA Tournament too. This is like a super-quality win. People don't come in here and win at Purdue. For us to be able to come in here and do that, especially after beating Illinois, and follow it up with this win, it says a lot about our program and where we are now. I think it is a great win; it is a quality win; it is an NCAA win for sure."
