IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team closed out the regular season with 79-71 loss at Iowa on Sunday (Feb. 26) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Michigan's reserves scored 30 points with Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) leading the Wolverines with 14 points off the bench. Thompson hit 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the three-point arc.
Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) and Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Forest) each added 13 points, while Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) registered team highs of eight rebounds and six assists.
With the score tied 7-7, Michigan used a 14-6 run to go out in front, 21-13, powered by three-pointers from Reynolds and Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) and Ryan's mid-range jumper with the shot expiring. Iowa responded with seven unanswered points to shrink Michigan's lead, 21-20, with 9:38 left.
The Wolverines scored five straight points on Sheffer's bucket in the lane and a shot from three-point range to extend U-M's lead, 26-20. Sheffer's three-point basket ignited a barrage of triples between both teams, with Iowa hitting four in a three-minute span with Thompson answering with a two from long range.
After the three-point exchange, Iowa led, 34-32, with 4:25 remaining, but Michigan hit a drought and was outscored 11-2 to trail 45-34 at the break.
To open the second half, the Wolverines fell behind by the largest margin of the game, 54-40, when Iowa used a 9-6 run. Sheffer scored eight points in the opening minutes of the half, and Arnold nailed back-to-back three-point baskets to hack away at the lead on an 8-1 run, narrowing the gap to 55-48 with 14:12 remaining.
The Hawkeyes answered with a 13-7 run to push their lead back to double figures, 68-55, with 5:24 left. Michigan's last run consisted of five straight points from Thompson when she hit a three from the left side and followed a missed shot and laid in the putback to chip the lead to single digits, 70-61, with 3:15 left. Thompson and Arnold hit a couple of triples down the stretch, but Iowa matched Michigan's nine points in the final minutes for the final score.
Michigan shot 40 percent from the floor and three-point range and tacked on 26 points on the paint. Iowa shot 46.9 percent from the field and won the rebounding effort, 43-37.
Iowa's Melissa Dixon led all players with 22 points, connecting on six three-point baskets. Freshman Samantha Logic recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Kamille Wahlin had 19 points and five boards, and Morgan Johnson added 15 points and six rebounds.
The Wolverines will be the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will play No. 10 seed Illinois in the first round at 11:30 a.m. Thursday (March 1) in Indianapolis, Ind. The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network. Thursday's winner will advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 seed Ohio State on Friday (March 2) at 11:30 a.m. on BTN.
