INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team cut a second-half, double-digit deficit to five points but missed opportunities down the stretch in falling to No. 14 Ohio State, 57-48, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Friday (March 2) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) led the Wolverines with 14 points, and Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) tallied 10 points to go with five assists. Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Nouvel Catholic Central) pulled down in a team-high eight rebounds and five steals to go with five points.
The Wolverines held Ohio State to another season low of 57 points but could not get going offensively in the first half. Overall, Michigan shot 34 percent from the floor and forced 21 OSU turnovers.
In the early minutes of the first half, Michigan trailed 7-3 before scoring nine unanswered points for a 12-7 lead at the 13:06 mark. Reynolds added five points with baskets from Ryan and Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle). The teams exchanged baskets and the score was knotted up twice before Nya Jordan (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Community) hit a layup to put U-M in front 18-16 with 7:40 remaining. However, OSU grabbed the lead on the next possession behind a triple and outscored U-M, 9-4, to hold a 25-22 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Michigan fell behind in the first minutes when OSU managed an 11-2 run to take a 36-24 lead at 15:31. U-M responded behind jumpers from Boylan and Reynolds and a three-point shot from Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet). Leading 39-29, Ohio State scored six unanswered points for the largest lead of the game, 45-29, with 10:51 on the clock.
The Wolverines retaliated with a 10-0 run to close the gap to six, 45-39. During the spurt, Reynolds tacked on five points, Boylan added a mid-range jumper, and Brenae Harris (Marion, Ohio/Harding) hit her first college three-pointer. OSU stretched the lead back to double figures, 49-39, but Michigan cut in down again, 51-45, with 3:33 remaining, and a three from Boylan cut the margin to five, 53-48 with 1:03 to play.
However, that was close a U-M got to pulling off a comeback, as four free throws from the Buckeyes provided the cushion for OSU.
Ohio State's Tayler Hill tallied 19 points from 7-of-12 shooting to lead all scorers, while Samantha Prahalis added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Kalpana Beach shot 5-of-11 from the field for 12 points while hauling in seven boards, and Amber Stokes posted a game-high nine rebounds.
The Wolverines will now await postseason consideration. The NCAA selection show is Monday, March 12, at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
