ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team opened the 2010 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) with a dominating 69-34 victory over Kent State on Friday evening (March 19) at Crisler Arena. The Wolverines jumped out to an insurmountable lead by holding the Golden Flashes to just two free throws over a span of 16:30 in the first half. Kent State finished the night shooting just 21 percent (12-of-58) from the field while falling victim to 22 turnovers.

Junior Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, while sophomore Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) scored nine of her 12 points from beyond the arc. Sophomore Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) provided a spark off the bench with eight points in 15 minutes. All 13 Wolverines saw time on the court, with 11 registering at least two points.

Michigan took a commanding 31-11 lead into halftime thanks to a balanced scoring attack and a defense that held Kent State without a field goal for more than 16 minutes. All but two of the 10 Wolverines that took the floor in the first half found the scoring column, with Hicks recording a team-high six points on 3-of-6 shooting. The U-M defense forced seven steals while limiting the Golden Flashes to 13 percent (4-of-30) shooting in the first frame.

Hicks continued to be a factor early in the second half, scoring six unanswered points in the first 2:10 to extend the Michigan lead to 37-11. Kent State cut the lead back down to 20 with 12:55 to play, but the Wolverines maintained their intensity and pushed the lead to a game-high 37 points on freshman Rachel Sheffer's (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) first career triple with 1:34 left in the game.

The Wolverines will meet Toledo in second-round action of the WNIT on Sunday (March 21) at 2 p.m. at Crisler Arena. The Rockets advanced with a 70-58 win over Pittsburgh. Fans can catch all the action on WTKA AM 1050 with Matt Park and Nick Brandon on the call.Tickets will be available for purchase the day of the game.
