ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Facing a five-point halftime deficit, the University of Michigan women's basketball team went on a 21-2 run out of intermission while holding Toledo without a field goal for the first 12:14 of the second half in a 72-57 victory over the Rockets in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on Sunday (March 21) at Crisler Arena.
The Wolverines put a trio of players in double digits, led by senior center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman Collegiate), who posted her third double-double of the season with a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard) chipped in with 21 points and six rebounds, with freshman Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) scoring 19 points with seven rebounds and six assists. The trio accounted for 62 of U-M's 72 points.
U-M quickly erased Toledo's halftime lead off a lay-up and three-pointer from Reynolds in the first 1:15 of the half. Michigan went over five minutes without scoring, allowing the Rockets to briefly regain the lead, 36-34, off a pair of free throws with 13:40 remaining on the clock.
The Maize and Blue then took over the game with an 18-0 spurt over the course of 5:08, taking the lead for good on a Reynolds' three at the 12:54 mark. The trio of Reynolds (seven points), Phillips (seven points) and Hollins (four points) accounted for all of U-M's offense during the run.
The Wolverines started the contest on a tear, using nine points from Phillips to take a 16-7 lead when Reynolds nailed a trey at the 15:22 mark. UT then responded with a 15-3 run over the next 5:49 to take its first lead of the game, 22-19, off a Tanika Mays' three-pointer with 9:33 remaining in the half.
The Toledo lead grew to as many as six in the first frame as the Rockets went to the locker room with a 34-29 advantage. UT shot 50 percent from the floor (12-for-24), including a 54.5 percent clip (6-for-11) from behind the arc. After hitting six of its first 10 shots, U-M went cold from the floor to finish with a 34.6 shooting percentage (9-for-26). Hollins scored 10 points with Phillips chipping in nine while limited to 10 minutes because of foul troubles.
With the victory, the Wolverines advance to the third round and await the winner of the game between St. Bonaventure and Northwestern. St. Bonaventure and Northwestern will play on Monday (March 21) at 7 p.m. Stay tuned to MGoBlue.com for further information on the date, time and location of U-M's WNIT third round contest.
