ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team had seven players finish in double-digit scoring and ended the first half on a 29-2 run en route to a 106-35 exhibition victory over Slippery Rock on Friday night (Nov. 2) inside newly renovated Crisler Center. It was also head coach Kim Barnes Arico's Michigan coaching debut.

Senior guard Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) spearheaded the Wolverines' offensive attack, recording a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) and sophomore guard Brenae Harris (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) paced U-M's scoring with 20 and 16 points, respectively, while senior guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central) contributed 13 points and six assists.

Winning by 71 points, Michigan shot 61 percent (43-for-71) from the floor, including a 57-percent clip (8-for-14 from behind the arc. U-M earned a 62-18 edge in points in the paint and outscored Slippery Rock's bench by a margin of 41-6. Michigan committed just five turnovers in the game and held Slippery Rock to 29 percent shooting (16-for-55).

After gaining control of the opening tipoff, U-M started off the scoring frenzy with a Harris three-point basket at the 19:43 mark. Following that bucket, the Wolverines extended their early lead behind an 8-0 run to start the game, capped off by a Ryan steal and coast-to-coast finish with an easy bucket at the 17:51 mark.

As the first half progressed, Michigan extended its lead to 37 points behind sharp shooting from all U-M starters, which combined for 20-for-27 shooting in the first half. Slippery Rock cut the deficit down to 10 points midway through the first half, but the Wolverines used a 29-2 run over the final nine minutes to take a 56-19 lead going into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, Michigan began the second half with the same starting five and went on a 10-4 run over first five minutes, making the score, 66-23. Contributions to this run included a layup by senior forward Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) and a three-point field goal from Elmblad.

Down the stretch, the Wolverines ended the game by outscoring the Rock 33-6 to put the game away over the last 10 minutes of the second half. During this time frame, Sheffer, senior forward Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) and freshman guard Madison Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich./University Liggett) all reached double-figure scoring with 12, 15, and 10 points, respectively.

The Wolverines officially begin the 2012-13 season next Friday (Nov. 9) when they host Detroit at 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Fans with a ticket to the men's game can use that for free admission to the women's contest.
