Michigan Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
On Kate Thompson's game ... "If there was one dimension that stood out for our team, it was her rebounding. She was really aggressive on the glass. And she's one of the best shooters in the country. But, for her to be able to do multiple things for us really helps. She showed herself on the rebounding end as well tonight. I was proud of her effort."
On the biggest surprise of the night ... "I thought we were able to bounce back. We had a scrimmage last week that was pretty difficult. We always talk about our ability to carry over what we learn in practice and our ability to bounce back and get better at the things we are weak at. I thought tonight we really came together and improved our turnovers, which was an issue for us. We were a little better with our defense in transition. To show progress is always positive."
On what she will focus on before the regular-season opener ... "I think we gave up way too many offensive rebounds and Detroit is a really, really good offensive rebounding team. There has got to be a great effort from us this week to make sure that we are blocking out and rebounding the basketball."
On the starting five being the same against Detroit ... "I'm not sure. We had a different starting lineup in the scrimmage than we had tonight. I think there's always the ability to change. I want the kids in the program to know that if they do really well in practice, they are going to have the ability to start. I think it's a game-to-game situation."
On naming Jenny Ryan captain prior to the game ... "After talking to our players today about leadership and who we want to lead this team, we gave them the opportunity to vote on a captain. I don't think there is any doubt in anyone's mind that she is the person that we want to lead this team. She is a coach on the floor; she is a coach in the locker room and just has a passion to be the best at everything she does. She is a team first kind of kid. I think that it was a very good selection."
