Michigan Head Coach Kim Barnes Arico
On the game as a whole ... "I knew tonight would be a tough test for us. They are a really strong rebounding team, so it was interesting to see how we would match their pressure and rebounding. I knew those were going to be two tough match-ups for us, and I was really pleased with the way Rachel (Sheffer) came out and played. She really set a tone in that first half. I thought we ran out of gas a little bit there in the second half. I was proud of the way we finished up. We could have fallen apart because they kept making runs, but we kept making big plays or free throws down the stretch. I am excited to have victory number one here at home."
On what she saw in the team after they held off the second-half comeback by Detroit ... "I think they really showed a lot of character. Detroit kept making runs on us in the second half and we had to hold it together. We showed some true grit -- we made free throws when we needed to. Sometimes when there is a lot of transition like that, a team can fall apart that way. But I was really proud of the way that we stuck together and did not give up that lead."
On if the team is going to need more off the bench going forward ... "That is something that we talked about after the game. You saw that our starters are definitely going to play a bunch of minutes, but the bench definitely needs to get better. And I think we had a tough matchup tonight -- but Sam Arnold and Madison Ristovski will definitely contribute going forward."
On Rachel Sheffer's performance ... "I thought Rachel was fabulous -- she was definitely the difference maker. That charge there at the end of the game was really critical as well, and she did it with four fouls. I thought Rachel stepped up. I think her rebounding in the first half was sensational. She just went after it -- those were big rebounds for us early and I think she set the tone, especially in her matchup with Shareta Brown.
On the defense late in the game and how they can improve it ... "Those and-ones definitely can't happen -- we gave up and-ones and we stopped the clock. But I think those are things you can definitely work on and improve on being our first game. It will definitely give us things to prepare for."
