ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team routed Alcorn State, 88-43, in the season opener on Friday night (Nov. 12) inside Crisler Arena. The Wolverines led by as many as 45, with sophomore guard Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) leading all scorers with 15 points, all coming from behind the three-point line.

Thompson was one of four Wolverines to score in double figures. Junior guard Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) added 14 points and a team-high seven assists, while senior guard Veronica Hicks (Chicago, Ill./Thornwood) had 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Wolverines with 12 points.

Michigan dominated the first half, shooting 52 percent (16-of-31) from the floor and 60 percent (6-of-10) from behind the arc. Thompson and junior forward Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) led the team with three three-pointers each. At the 18:50 mark, sophomore forward Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) scored the first basket for the Wolverines, starting a 12-0 run. U-M held Alcorn State scoreless for 6:40, forcing the Braves into nine straight turnovers. The Wolverines continued to stop the Braves, keeping them to just four points in the first 15 minutes of play. Another 29-5 run and nine forced turnovers led Michigan into the locker room at the half leading, 41-9.

The Wolverines saw a comeback from Alcorn State in the second half but never let their lead slip under 30 points. U-M forced another eight turnovers in the second half, bringing the game total to 27. All 10 players that saw action had at least one field goal in the game.

Michigan closed the game shooting 51 percent from the floor, dishing out 22 assists on 32 made field goals. The Wolverines were 11-of-24 (46 percent) from the three-point arc and 13-of-18 (72 percent) from the free throw line.

Michigan continues its season-opening home stand when it welcomes Xavier, currently ranked No. 5, to Crisler Arena for a nationally televised contest on the Big Ten Network on Monday (Nov. 15).
