CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team pushed a five-point halftime lead to 11 points just 54 seconds into the second half en route to a 62-53 victory at Xavier on Monday night (Nov. 12) at the Cintas Center.
Senior forward Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) scored a game-high 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Senior guard Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) chipped in 14 points, six rebounds and four blocks, and sophomore guard Brenae Harris (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) went for nine points and a career-high seven rebounds. The Wolverines shot almost 42 percent from the floor in the game (23-for-55), including 42 percent (7-for-17) from beyond the arc.
The Wolverines pushed their five-point halftime advantage to 11 points in the first 54 seconds of the second half, never allowing Xavier to get closer than six points during the rest of the contest. Harris opened the scoring with an old-fashioned three-point play, before Thompson nailed her fourth triple of the game at the 19:06 mark.
Michigan continued to increase its lead to as many as 15 points with 8:43 remaining off a lay-up from Harris. Xavier cut the lead to seven with 1:49 to go, but a pair of free throws from senior guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central) with 47 seconds remaining sealed the game for Michigan as neither team scored the rest of the way.
After falling behind 7-3 in the early going, Michigan went on a 13-8 run for a five-point advantage with 8:57 to go in the half. The Wolverines rode the hot shooting of Thompson, who hit three treys in the first six minutes of the contest.
Xavier closed the Michigan lead to a point, 25-24, after a three-point play with 5:34 remaining in the first half. The Maize and Blue responded by reeling off seven straight points, including a 30-foot buzzer-beating three-pointer from freshman guard Madison Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich./University Liggett) to take a 32-25 lead with 3:31 to go in the half.
The Wolverines hit the break with a 36-31 lead, led by Sheffer's 12 points and Thompson's 11. In the first half, Michigan shot 48.4 percent (15-for-31) from the field, including a 50 percent clip (6-for-12) from three-point range, while holding Xavier to 44.4 percent (12-for-27) shooting. U-M outrebounded the Musketeers, 18-13, during the first 20 minutes of play.
The Wolverines will wrap up their two-game road swing on Friday (Nov. 16) when they travel to Salt Lake City to take on Utah. Tipoff is slated for 4:30 p.m. MST.
