ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman guard Siera Thompson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) put up a career-high 22 points, and junior guard Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) went for 19 on Wednesday evening (Nov. 20), pushing the University of Michigan women's basketball team to an 83-75 win over Pittsburgh at Crisler Center.
Thompson led the Wolverines in scoring on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc, while Elmblad recorded seven boards and three assists. Sophomore guard Madison Ristovski (Sterling Heights, Mich./Liggett), who finished with 13 points,chipped in with five straight points midway through the second half, giving the team a six-point lead with 12 minutes to go. Junior Cyesha Goree (Grand Rapids, Mich./Wyoming Park) was the Maize and Blue's fourth double-figure scorer, as she had 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
Michigan led 34-31 going into halftime behind shooting 13-of-26 from the field and 6-of-10 from three-point range. U-M also edged Pittsburgh in rebounds by a 16-14 count.
The Wolverines scored two quick baskets in the opening possessions of the game and led by as many as eight points in the first 20 minutes. U-M also had runs of 8-0 and 7-0 in the second half, the latter giving the Maize and Blue a 12-point advantage (68-56) with 5:32 to go.
Pittsburgh played strong in the paint, scoring 32 of its 75 points around the basket, and scored 27 bench points; not enough to overcome their 13 turnovers that led to 20 Wolverine points.
The Wolverines proved capable of holding on to their lead going down to the wire, shooting 85 percent (22-of-26) on the night from the charity stripe and making all 16 freebies in the second stanza.
U-M has nine days before its next game when the squad travels to Brooklyn, N.Y., to take on Texas Tech on Friday, Nov. 29. Tip is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Barclays Center.
