ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a late run to wear down Iowa State, defeating the Cyclones, 56-49, on Sunday afternoon (Dec. 4) at Crisler Arena.

The Wolverines found themselves down 37-32 with 10 minutes left in the game but scored 11 consecutive points during a 16-5 run to take the lead for the remainder of the game.

Courtney Boylan (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) led all players with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, adding four rebounds and two assists. Her three-pointer with 10 minutes remaining in the game ended an 8-0 run by ISU and jump started Michigan's key run.

Kate Thompson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) added 15 points off the bench, including two three-pointers, while chipping in four rebounds and a team-high four assists. Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central) recorded he second double-double of the season, posting 11 points and 10 rebounds. She led the team in scoring with eight points and four boards at the break.

To end the first half, the Wolverines found themselves in front 24-22 at the thanks to a Boylan jumper from the elbow and a Thompon three-pointer from the wing in the last two minutes. U-M shot just 40 percent in the first half (10-25) but shot 44.5 percent (4-9) from the three-point range to hold the advantage. The Cyclones shot 39.1 percent (9-of-23) in the first 20 minutes and only 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from the arch.

U-M forced Iowa State into 12 first-half turnovers and capitalized, posting 15 points from ISU's miscues. For the game, U-M registered 21 points from ISU turnovers and was lifted by 20 bench points.

The second half was a game of runs. U-M was down 30-24 after an Iowa State 8-0 start in the opening minutes. Carmen Reynolds (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) scored her only basket of the game to end the charge, sparking a Michigan 8-0 run to put the Wolverines in front 32-30.

After Iowa State went ahead 37-32, the Wolverines responded when Boylan and Rachel Sheffer (Watervliet, Mich./Watervliet) each drained three-pointers. On U-M's next offensive set, Sheffer found Boylan inside with a nifty pass to put U-M up, 40-37, before Thompson was fouled and connected a three-point play at the line, for a 43-38 lead.

U-M stretched its largest lead of the game to 46-38 after a three-pointer by Sam Arnold (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park). A Ryan basket with 2:52 left put U-M up by seven, despite a barrage of three-pointers down the stretch, Iowa State never pulled closer than four points. Clutch free-throw shooting by Boylan (6-of-6) polished off the victory for the Wolverines.

ISU shot 33.9 percent overall, including 27.8 from the arch and was backed by Hallie Christofferson's 13 points and 10 rebounds. Chelsea Poppens added nine points and 11 rebounds, while Jessica Schroll chipped in 12 points for the Cyclones.

U-M will next head to Calihan Hall in Detroit, Mich., to face Detroit-Mercy on Thursday (Dec. 8) at 5 p.m.
