ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team will hold its annual "Pink Game" on Thursday, Feb. 7, at Crisler Center against Illinois. The Wolverines, participating in a pink game for the fifth consecutive season, are partnering with the American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer for this year's event. All donations received during the game, proceeds from the auction and a portion of M-Den merchandise sales will benefit MSABC.
The M-Den will sell a variety of pink items at all Ann Arbor locations, including the two stores inside Crisler Center, throughout the month of February. "Hope Cards" will also be on sale for $1 at M-Den, allowing fans to purchase and write the name of a loved one who is battling or has battled breast cancer. All cards will be displayed at M-Den stores.
There will be several initiatives taking place during U-M's game against Illinois:
Player Introductions -- Seven special breast cancer survivors will introduce the Michigan starting lineup and will receive an autographed ball from each starter as they are announced.
Miracle Minute -- Throughout the game, stories from breast cancer survivors will be highlighted on the video board. After each story, donation baskets will be passed around the arena for one minute to allow fans the opportunity to contribute to more breast cancer miracles.
Auction -- Select game-worn pink jerseys and team-autographed pink basketballs will be auctioned off during the game at section 114 on the concourse. The auction closes 10 minutes after the game ends.
Chuck-a-Duck for a Buck -- Pink rubber ducks will be on sale for $1 at the marketing table on the concourse at section 136. Directly following the game, we will ask everyone who purchased a duck to chuck it onto the court, aiming at the Block M at center court. All ducks that land on the block M can be redeemed for a prize at the marketing table. One lucky duck will be selected to receive courtside tickets to the women's basketball game against Michigan State on Feb. 16.
Twitter -- Fans are encouraged to use the Twitter hashtag #MGoPink and tweet @umichwbball during the game to share their own cancer stories or to tweet in honor or memory of loved one who have battled any type of cancer. Select tweets will be shown on the video board throughout the game.
Halftime Recognition -- At halftime, all breast cancer survivors in attendance are encouraged to come down to the floor to be recognized and receive a special survivor medal from the American Cancer Society. Special guest Kathleen Beilein will assist in the medal ceremony. All cancer survivors, caregivers and all of those affected by any type of cancer will also be recognized at this time.
The Wolverines will wear maize jerseys with pink numbers and pink shoes in honor of the cause.
