ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) of the University of Michigan women's basketball team was named to the Capital One Academic All-America second team on Thursday (Feb. 20), becoming just the second Wolverine in program history to earn Academic All-America honors.

Elmblad, a biopsychology, cognition and neuroscience major, joins former Wolverine great Diane Dietz(1979-82) as the only players in school history to garner Academic All-America honors. Dietz was a second-team selection in 1980 before picking up back-to-back first team honors in 1981 and 1982.

Elmblad, U-M's captain, has started all 27 contests this season for Michigan, averaging 11.9 points and 7.7 rebounds in a Big Ten-leading 36.7 minutes per game. She has seven double-doubles on the season and has scored in double figures 18 times this season. She recently eclipsed the 500-point career mark (538) and 400-rebound plateau (446). She is the 32nd player in U-M history to reach those marks in a career, currently ranking 52nd in scoring and 28th in rebounding.

For her career, the lefty has appeared in 91 games, starting 74 times. She holds career averages of 5.9 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Elmblad has established new career highs this season in nearly every statistical category, including points (19), rebounds (13), assists (8), steals (3) and minutes (45).

Elmblad was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree last season as a sophomore.

Michigan wraps up the home portion of its schedule on Saturday (Feb. 22) against Iowa. U-M will honor seniors Kendra Seto (Oshawa, Ont./Eastdale C.V.I) and Val Driscoll (Stoughton, Mass./Archbishop William) prior to the game.
