ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- Nya Jordan, Rachel Sheffer and Jenny Ryan, who will join the University of Michigan women's basketball team as freshmen during the 2009-10 season, have been named finalists for the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Miss Basketball Award.
The award, which is sponsored by the Detroit Free Press, is given to the top female high school basketball player in the state of Michigan and will be announced on March 16. Thisseason's ballot features six finalists with Detroit Country Days Amber Moore, Flint Hamadys Jasmine Thomas and Benton Harbors Destiny Williams joining Jordan, Sheffer and Ryan on the ballot.
Michigan has been home to two Miss Basketball winners. Former Wolverines Tabitha Pool (2002-05) and Krista Clement (2005-08) each took home the honor prior to her freshman season at Michigan.
Jordan is a two-year varsity letterwinner at Detroit Community High School, a HoopGurlz top-20 high school program. During her junior season, she averaged a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to go with four steals per game. She led her team to district and regional championships and the Michigan Class B State finals. Jordan is ranked No. 117 in the All-Star Girls Basketball Report and is a 2009 Sporting News honorable mention preseason All-American.
Ryan is a senior at Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central High School, where she is a three-year varsity letterwinner and has earned two Class C State championships. She is a two-time member of the Detroit Free Press All-State Dream Team and is a two-time selection to the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan first team and the Detroit Free Press All-State first team.
Ryan is the MHSAA women's basketball finals record holder for points in a quarter with 17 in the state finals in 2006-07 and has the record for steals in quarter with 12 in 2007-08. She is also on the MHSAA all-time scorers list for most points in a state championship game with 30 points in 2007. She was the 2008 AP Class C Player of the Year and a member of the 2008 Saginaw News Dream Team.
Sheffer is a three-sport athlete at Watervliet High School. She is a three-year varsity letterwinner and a three-time first team all-conference selection. She is averaging 14.7 points, 13.7 rebounds and 5.6 blocks per game for her high school career and is a two-time team MVP at Watervliet.
During her junior season, she was a member of the Associated Press All-State first team and was named to Mick McCabe's Top 100 Players in the state (No. 14). She also earned basketball Coaches Association of Michigan first team honors and was named Sporting News Preseason All-America honorable mention.
