Michigan (22-8) heads to the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 3 seed after finishing third in the Big Ten with an 11-5 record. U-M will face No. 6 seed Michigan State in the final quarterfinal game of the tournament on Friday (March 3) at approximately 9 p.m. The game can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
For just the fourth time in school history, U-M finished with in the top three of the Big Ten standings with an 11-5 record. Michigan secured the No. 3 seed for this week's Big Ten Tournament and a double-bye into the quarterfinals. It was Michigan's highest finish since tying for third in 2010-11.
Michigan will face Michigan State in the final quarterfinal game of the Big Ten Tournament on Friday (March 3) at approximately 9 p.m. It will mark the fourth time in the last five years that the in-state rivals have played in the Big Ten Tournament. The Wolverines went 0-1 against Michigan State this season.
Michigan's trio of junior Katelynn Flaherty, sophomore Hallie Thome and freshman Kysre Gondrezick combine to be the highest scoring trio in the Big Ten. Flaherty is third in the conference in scoring at 19.9 points per game, while Thome is 15th (15.2 ppg) and Gondrezick is 17th (14.9 ppg). The three combine for 50.1 points per game, ahead of Maryland's 48.9 points per game (Brionna Jones, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough, Destiny Slocum).
For the sixth straight season, U-M has reached the 20-win plateau after knocking off Purdue on Feb. 8. It was the fastest the Wolverines have ever gotten to 20 victories. Michigan is now up to 22 wins on the season, tying the school record for wins. It is the first time in school history that U-M won 22 games in the regular season.
Michigan's underclassmen are combining to score 51.2 percent of U-M's points this season, headlined by sophomore Hallie Thome (455 points) and freshman Kysre Gondrezick (446). Sophomore Nicole Munger is third among the underclassmen in scoring with 167 points, all coming off the bench.
Freshman Kysre Gondrezick became the first freshman in school history to earn All-Big Ten honors (first or second team) and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week a school-record six times. She ended the regular season averaging 14.9 points, 3.5 boards and 2.9 assists in 27.2 minutes per game. Her 446 points is the sixth-best total by a freshman in school history and she can pass Siera Thompson with three more points to move into the top five.
