ANKARA, Turkey -- Former University of Michigan women's basketball player Krista Phillips (2007-10) helped Canada secure its first berth to the Olympics in 12 years with a 71-63 win over Japan on Sunday (July 1) in the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
In Sunday's win over Japan, Phillips scored nine points on 4-for-8 shooting from the field and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as Canada earned the last remaining Olympic berth for the 2012 London games. After falling to Croatia, 59-56, on Friday (June 29), Canada had to win two consecutive games to make it to London. The Canadian team knocked off Argentina, 58-41, on Saturday (June 30) in the first game, with Phillips chipping in four points and six boards to push the team into the final game against Japan.
Canada has been placed in Group B in the London Olympics, with Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, France and Russia. The 2012 London Olympics women's basketball event will take place from July 28-Aug. 11.
