ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore forward Kelsey Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./Inkster) of the University of Michigan women's basketball team will miss three to five months with a foot injury, head coach Kim Barnes Arico announced on Tuesday (Oct. 8).
Mitchell broke a bone in her foot during Michigan's preseason workouts and had surgery to repair the injury on Monday (Oct. 7). She missed the 2012-13 season after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in summer workouts. During Michigan's foreign tour in August, Mitchell averaged 9.3 points and 10.0 rebounds in U-M's three games.
"You feel for her because she worked so hard to get healthy after tearing her ACL last year," Barnes Arico said. "She was going to really help us on the rebounding end this season. I know that she will work just as hard this time around to get back on the court."
Michigan opens the 2013-14 season with an exhibition contest against Wayne State on Nov. 1 at Crisler Center. The regular season tips off on Nov. 8 against Bowling Green in New Rochelle, N.Y.
