ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior guard Jenny Ryan (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central) will serve as the University of Michigan women's basketball team's captain for the 2012-13 season, head coach Kim Barnes Arico announced prior to U-M's exhibition contest against Slippery Rock on Friday (Nov. 2).
"After talking to our players today about leadership and who we want to lead this team, we gave them the opportunity to vote on a captain," Barnes Arico said. "I don't think there is any doubt in anyone's mind that she is the person that we want to lead this team. She is a coach on the floor; she is a coach in the locker room and just has a passion to be the best at everything she does. She is a team first kind of kid. I think that it was a very good selection."
Ryan, who has appeared in all 97 games since stepping foot on campus in Ann Arbor, averaged 6.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 3.1 steals and 34.8 minutes per game last season. She led the Big Ten with 98 steals, which is the third-best single-season total in U-M history. She was the first Wolverine to earn All-Big Ten Defensive Team honors and was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first team as a junior.
For her career, Ryan ranks fourth in school history with 228 steals. She has scored 632 points and grabbed 560 rebounds, averaging 6.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in 34.4 minutes per game.
Michigan kicks off the regular season next Friday (Nov. 9), hosting Detroit at 6 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team, which begins action at 8:30 p.m. Fans with a men's ticket can use that for free admission to the women's game.
