ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team scored a pair of second-half goals to rally past intrastate rival Michigan State, 2-1, in exhibition action on Saturday (Aug. 18) at Phyllis Ocker Field.

After just seven combined shots in a scoreless first half, the Spartans took advantage of a scramble in front of the U-M cage to break open the tie at the 41:21 mark. Freshman goalkeeper Adrianna Crovo (Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) stopped back-to-back shots from close range, but the Wolverines could not clear as MSU's Allie Ahern corralled the ball on the left side and lifted it over a sprawling Crovo.

Junior Michelle Roberts (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke HS) put the Wolverines on the board just seven minutes later, at 48:02, knotting the score at 1-1 off a U-M penalty corner. Roberts collected the ball at the top left side of the circle and sent a sweeping shot to the far side past MSU goalkeeper Sierra Patton.

Michigan continued to pressure in the MSU zone, drawing another corner before taking advantage of a flurry to earn a penalty stroke at the 60:03 mark. Junior/sophomore Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) converted on the opportunity, lifting a shot to the top left corner of the cage for the game-winning tally.

The Wolverines outshot Michigan State, 11-8, and held a 4-1 edge in penalty corners. Crovo registered three saves on four MSU shots on goal, while the Spartans' Patton and Molly Cassidy combined for four stop.

At the end of the contest, the teams spent an additional 30 minutes practicing corners and penalty strokes.

The Wolverines officially kick off the season next weekend, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Michigan will face North Carolina at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 25) before closing out against host Wake Forest at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 26). Both games will be held at the Demon Deacons' Kentner Stadium.
