NORFOLK, Va. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team battled Old Dominion to a 1-1 tie in its annual preseason exhibition contest on Thursday afternoon (Aug. 21) at the Monarchs' L.R. Hill Sports Complex. The Wolverines struck first with a goal late in the first half before ODU evened the score with one late in the second.
Sophomore Courtney Enge (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch HS) tallied the lone Michigan goal at the 24:53 mark, getting her stick on fifth-year senior Leslie Smith's (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) shot from outside the circle and redirecting it past Monarch goalkeeper Megan Hept.
The U-M advantage held for the bulk of the second half as Old Dominion poured on the offense, outshooting the Wolverines, 8-0, and outcornering them, 7-0, before ODU broke through on a corner opportunity. Junior/sophomore goalkeeper Chris Lueb (Den Bosch, Netherlands/Staples HS (Conn.)) stopped the direct shot, but Monarch Emily Harting was in position to knock in the rebound, neutralizing the score at the 63:13 mark.
With the score still tied at the end of regulation, the teams skipped the overtime frames to practice the shootout. Old Dominion won the shootout, 4-1.
With the finishing touches being added to its newly renovated Ocker Field, Michigan is spending its 2014 preseason at the USA Field Hockey National Training Center in nearby Virginia Beach, Va.
