EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team sacrificed an early advantage in its annual exhibition game against intrastate rival Michigan State, falling, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon (Aug. 24) at MSU's Ralph Young Field. The Spartans scored twice in the second half, netting the game-winning goal with 3:14 remaining in regulation.

The Wolverines struck quickly, converting their first corner opportunity of the contest to take the game's initial advantage at the 4:01 mark. Senior Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) scored on the direct shot, rocketing a low blast that was redirected in front to the right side of the cage. Senior/junior Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and senior Kim Sheaffer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson HS) earned assists for the stop and the push, respectively.

Both teams were held to limited scoring opportunities in the first half, which saw just eight combined shots and two penalty corners -- both Wolverine corners. Michigan had a near-miss chance in the closing minute of the frame as freshman Sina Lampe (Bergisch Gladbach, Germany/Herkanrath), unattested in the circle, hit the crossbar on a tip from a long lead pass from senior/junior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS). The shot beat MSU goalkeeper Molly Cassidy but glanced high off the post to retain U-M's one-goal advantage at halftime.

Michigan State surged past the Wolverines with goals early and late in the second half. Abby Barker put MSU on the board at the 36:57 mark, getting her stick on the direct shot from her team's first corner opportunity of the game. The Spartans converted on another penalty corner in the waning minutes of regulation as Kristen Henn scored on the direct shot to the lower left corner.

The Wolverines immediately drew a corner opportunity of their own but could not convert on an extended flurry in the MSU circle.

Michigan State outshot the Wolverines, 10-6, while U-M held a 4-3 edge in corner. Senior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned one save -- a spectacular, diving stop midway through the second -- while Cassidy posted three saves in the Spartan cage.

Michigan will officially open its 2013 season on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 31-Sept. 1) at the Maine Field Hockey Complex in Orono, Maine. U-M will face Massachusetts at 1 p.m. on Saturday before returning the following day for a 1 p.m. contest against host Maine.
