IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Despite posting advantages in both shots and penalty corners, the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell to No. 18 Wake Forest, 2-1, in its final game of the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 8) at Iowa's Grant Field.

The Demon Deacons broke a deadlocked score with 11:30 remaining in the second half, taking advantage of a pass play deep in the Wolverine circle, as Kari Walkley chipped in the game-winner in front of the cage. After Michigan called a timeout in response, the Wolverines pressured offensively with three corners in the next seven minutes but could not convert as time expired.

The teams traded goals midway through the first half. Despite significant early pressure from the Wolverines, it was Wake Forest who opened scoring, at the 19:55 mark, off its first corner opportunity of the contest. Jess Newak netted the goal, redirecting the shot from Anna Kozniuk.

Michigan responded quickly, however, as sophomore Jaime Dean (Marathon, N.Y./Whitney Point HS) posted her first goal of the season -- second of her career -- on a rebound at 21:12.

U-M outshot the Demon Deacons, 13-9, and outcornered them, 7-5. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned four saves in the Wolverine cage, while Wake Forest goalie Valerie Dahman stopped three of U-M's four shots on goal.

The Wolverines will kick off the home portion of their 2013 schedule next weekend, hosting Louisville on Saturday (Sept. 14) and UC Davis on Sunday (Sept. 15). Both contests are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts at Phyllis Ocker Field.
