ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) recorded her third career hat trick and the University of Michigan field hockey defense held Ball State without a shot as the Maize and Blue defeated the Cardinals, 5-0, on Saturday morning (Sept. 17) at Ocker Field. Michigan outshot the Cardinals, 18-0, in the first 35 minutes, but the Maize and Blue led 1-0 at the break. In the 16th minute, freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) tipped in a shot from senior Jess Allen (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) for her sixth goal of the season.

The Wolverines had 14 shots in the second half, four of which were for goals. Mack had the natural hat trick, scoring on a pass from senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) at 42:08, tipping in an Allen shot 1:15 later, and scoring on a cross from sophomore Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) that went off Haley Fusting, the BSU keeper, and into the net. The scoring ended at 55:09 when Guttman put away her second goal of the game and seventh of the season on an assist by sophomore Mallory Albini (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual).

Michigan had a 32-0 shot advantage for the game. Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) earned the win in goal, going the full 70 minutes. The Wolverines also had a 17-0 penalty-corner advantage in the win.
