LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team notched a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 22) at the Bisons' Graham Field. The win marked U-M's second straight shutout and third of the season.
Sophomore Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) scored her first goal of the season to put the Wolverines on the board at the 21:50 mark. After accepting a lead pass from freshman Aisling Naughton (Goatstown, Pa./Mount Anville Secondary), Guttman made good on a breakaway opportunity alone in the Bucknell circle, beating Bison goalkeeper Erica Perrine.
Michigan converted on its only penalty corner of the contest to cushion its advantage early in the second half. Junior Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) scored on the direct shot for her eighth marker on the season, rocketing a low shot past a sprawling Perrine to extend her scoring streak to five straight games. Senior Liesl Morris (Lafayette, N.J./The Taft School) and junior/sophomore Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) earned assists for the stop and the push, respectively.
The Wolverines outshot Bucknell, 11-5, but were outcornered in the contest, 3-1. Senior/junior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) stopped all three Bison shots on goal for her ninth complete shutout effort, while Perrine earned five saves in the Bucknell cage.
Michigan (6-3) will kick off Big Ten Conference play tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 23), traveling to State College, Pa., to face No. 6-ranked Penn State at noon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex. The Nittany Lions opened their league schedule yesterday with a 7-1 decision against Indiana.
