EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored seven unanswered goals, including four in a 12-minute span at the end of the first half, to defeat Yale, 7-1, in a neutral-site game on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) at Lakeside Field. Michigan had five goal scorers in its highest scoring output since 2009.
Yale scored the initial goal at the nine-minute mark as Gabby Garcia put the Bulldogs on the board. Sophomore Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) then scored the equalizer unassisted at 22:49 and classmate Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) put the eventual game-winner in the net at 26:55. Freshman Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp) tipped in senior Bryn Bain's (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) pass to make it 3-1 at 30:18. Just before halftime, freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) took a Bain pass and beat Yale goalkeeper Emily Cain to make it 4-1 at the break.
Wouters put Michigan's fifth goal on the board at 54:11 with an assist to McCallister. Sophomore Michelle Roberts (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) got into the scoring act, scoring off an assist by sophomore Kim Sheaffer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) at 55:30 and deflecting a Fobe shot in the net at 64:23, giving the Maize and Blue the final 7-1 victory.
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) made two saves in the win, her fourth of the season. Michigan outshot the Bulldogs, 14-9, and had a 7-3 penalty-corner advantage. Bain and freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) led the Maize and Blue with three shots apiece.
