PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team struck first but could not hang on to its lead at No. 11-ranked Stanford, falling, 2-1, on Friday afternoon (Oct. 25) at the Cardinal's Varsity Turf.
Stanford came out fast, earning a corner and four shots in the opening three minutes of play, but U-M took advantage of a Cardinal card to claim the initial advantage. Sophomore Shannon Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Shrub Oak HS) redirected a hard shot from senior Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) to record her sixth marker of the season at the 3:34 mark.
Stanford responded on a penalty-corner opportunity midway through the half. Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made the initial stop on the direct shot, but Fran Tew knocked in the rebound to even the score at 17:02.
The Cardinal converted on another corner opportunity midway through the second frame, at 55:53, to claim their first advantage of the contest. Jones again stopped the direct shot, but U-M could not clear it, as Hope Burke knocked in the rebound to put Stanford on top.
Stanford outshot the Wolverines, 15-5, and outcornered them, 8-1. Jones was spectacular in the U-M cage, earning a season-best nine saves, while Cardinal goalkeeper Dulcie Davies stopped one of Michigan's two shots on goal. Junior/sophomore Mackenzie Ellis (Madison, N.J./Madison HS) also posted the first defensive save of her career.
The Wolverines will wrap up the West Coast road trip tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 26), facing off against Pacific in their final non-conference slate of the season at 3 p.m. PDT at Stanford's Varsity Turf.
