PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of penalty-corner opportunities to roll to a 5-0 win against Pacific on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) at Stanford's Varsity Turf. The shutout victory is the Wolverines' fourth of the season.

Michigan boasted significant advantages in shots (28-4) and corners (17-5). The Wolverines went 4-for-17 on penalty corners in the contest, converting three opportunities in the first half and another late in the second.

Senior captain Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) put U-M on the board early, at the 4:55 mark, scoring on the second of successive corner opportunities. The Wolverines came out firing in the contest, drawing three corners and registering six shots in the opening five minutes. Mack found the backboard on the sixth -- already her third attempt of game -- after senior/junior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey HS) faked the drag on the corner direct shot, dishing the ball to Mack, who hammered it through the goalkeeper's legs for her 18th goal of the season.

Smith scored two of her own in the first half -- both on rocketed corner direct shots -- at 8:43 and with time expired at 35:00. Sophomore Lauren Thomas (Aylesbury, England/Aylesbury HS) earned assists for the stick stop on both goals, while sophomore Jaime Dean (Marathon, N.Y./Whitney Point HS) and senior Kim Sheaffer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson HS) inserted on one apiece to each record their first assist of the season.

Smith's goals bookended a solo effort from senior/junior Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS), who dribbled the ball into the circle from the left side, spun around a defender and fired a shot that hit the right sideboard at the 25:44 mark. Both Smith and McCallister own career bests in goals this season with eight and six, respectively.

Senior/junior Sammy Gray (Wilmette, Ill./North Shore Country Day School) closed out scoring with a late tally in the second half, converting on the corner direct shot at 68:41 for her first goal of the season. Dean collected her second assist of the game for the insert, while junior Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned an assist for the stop.

Fifth-year senior Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and sophomore/freshman Chris Lueb (Hertogenbosch, Netherlands/Staples (Conn.) HS) posted a save apiece to combine for the shutout effort, while Pacific's Molly Macierz earned nine saves on U-M's 14 shots on goal.

The Wolverines will return home to Phyllis Ocker Field next weekend to wrap up the regular season with a pair of Big Ten Conference games. U-M will host Penn State at 4 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 1) before closing out the weekend with a noon slate against Indiana on Sunday (Nov. 3).
